She got out of the cab and took a deep breath as she looked at the small one-story house, with its neatly cut lawn and spiky, tropical-looking garden running along the walk. She wasn’t in Chicago anymore. A pickup truck was parked in the drive, and from the open window she could hear a slow strum of acoustic guitar.

She was really here. And on the other side of that door was Nathan.

Her heart was doing its best to pound right out of her chest.

She walked up the concrete path and across the porch she recognized from the picture he’d sent her. Raising her hand, she knocked on the screen door.

The strumming stopped, and she could hear Nathan sigh, which made her giggle. She pictured him setting down the guitar, pushing himself up off the couch or from a chair, and slowly walking to the front door.

Then he was there, a shadow on the other side of the screen, and she tipped her head to the side.

“Hi, Sailor.” She raised her hand, and he just stood there staring at her for a second.

“Emme?” She watched, her breath frozen in her chest, as a slow, broad smile spread across Nathan’s face. “Holy shit.”

He pushed the door open, and then she was in the air—in his arms—and his mouth covered hers, hot and wet and possessive.

Perfect.

She whimpered as he kissed her, hard at first, then softer, over and over again. His hands were everywhere, shoved into her hair, then running up and down her back, and she held on to him for dear life.

“I’ve missed you so much,” he ground out when he finally pulled away, his face less than an inch from hers, his breath puffing hot against her lips. “I was this close to flying to Chicago and walking the streets, calling out your name.”

“That sounds crazy.”

“You make me crazy.”

“I didn’t know.” Her chest ached. Yes she did. She felt it too, but she couldn’t handle it before. She offered him a weak, shaky smile. “But I flew to California. So maybe I do know.”

“Yeah.” He crushed her against his body, holding her tight as he smoothed a hand up and down her back. “How long are you here?”

“The weekend. And then…” Her voice shook as she sucked in some extra air. “I’ve moved, Nathan. I don’t live in Chicago anymore.”

“Where do you...are you here?”

She wobbled her head back and forth. “San Francisco.”

“I’ll take it.” He kissed her again, his lips tugging at hers, his tongue eager and questing. “You taste better than I remember.”

“Same.”

“Come inside.”

“Okay.”

“I should warn you, I’m going to try to get you naked as soon as we’re on the other side of that door.”

“I said okay, didn’t I?” She laughed as he grabbed her bag and walked backwards, holding on to her hand the whole time, and pulled her into his house. “This place is nicer than you described.”

He hadn’t sent her many more pictures. He’d shown her little details, a guitar on a couch or the dinner he’d cooked, but she’d never gotten a clear picture in her mind of his space.
